Once we have completed the sub floor frame we can start the wall framing. Remember that the floor construction is different for sheet flooring to strip flooring (floor boards). When we using sheet flooring we always lay it first and then build the walls, strip flooring is laid after the wall construction.
We mark out the 2 longest walls and check for square again and make minor adjustments if needed. You use a chalk line for this. All the other walls are marked out using parallels from these 2 lines. We always mark out both sides of the wall as shown.
Once all walls a re marked out we cut top and bottom wall plates and tack them in place- these are removed when we start constructing walls.
This picture shows most of the wall plates cut.
When this is done you have to mark out all the stud positions. You first mark wall intersections and then any opening for windows or doors. When this is done you mark out the remaining gaps as per plans (usually 450mm centres).
We then start constructing the longest external walls first.
We then complete any other external walls but may need to leave an opening to get materials in.
After this is done we construct the longest internal walls and then complete the remaining smaller walls.
You need to consider where you can lay the wall out and lift it with out interfering with other walls.
Here we are constructing 2 outside walls. Note the studs laid out in position for nailing. In openings we need to nail in lintels, headers and sills (for windows).
As each wall is completed we stand them in place with a temporary brace until all walls are done and connected. We also check walls for plumb and nail off any bracing.
